Hypnosis And Procrastination

Procrastination is a nasty habit, which can actually end up ruining your entire reputation and future career prospects. Procrastination, which Wikipedia defines as “a type of behavior which is characterized by deferment of actions or tasks to a later time”, occurs when we constantly put away something for some indefinite ‘tomorrow’, rather than tackle it and finish it off today itself.

There are things like visiting the physician or dentist, going to the bank, filing Income Tax returns, paying bills and so on, that we know are important to finish on time, but simply do not feel like getting done. Why does procrastination take place and what is a way to stop this from negatively affecting our lives?

The pain-pleasure phenomenon

Sigmund Freud was the first to note that we humans solidly base all our behavior patterns on the pain-pleasure phenomenon. We all try to gain the maximum pleasure in our lives and avoid all instances and events that cause pain or discomfort of some kind, either physical or psychological. He discovered further, that we refrain from completing a task because we view it as painful to us in some way.

This is what happens with procrastination too. Though we understand fully well that putting the work off would only lead to more inconvenience and possibly even embarrassment, we go ahead and do just that!

So what is the permanent solution for this procrastination issue? How do we deal with it? One method to tackle this problem is to get to the task immediately and take breaks in between. If , for instance, a student does not like to study a particular subject, he could get to studying just that subject and give himself a short, five-minute break after, say, about half an hour of study. Of course, he forces himself to study, but also get the much-required break to get rid of the tedium. He would only have to stay focused on the subject for that half hour that he works on it. Setting this kind of time-table lets him ease up a little and also finish the task at hand more quickly and efficiently.

In case your procrastinating tendency occurs due to some fear (such as that of visiting the dentist), you will have to tackle it with much more gusto. It will need a good deal of willpower from your side to break away from those shackles and free yourself of your compulsive behavior. Usually, handling that fear gradually, little by little, helps you get out of the put-it-off-forever tendency!

How hypnosis can help with procrastination

Did you know hypnosis can work wonders on procrastination? Well, a qualified and competent Hypnotherapist can reach deep down to the very root of your problem, analyze it and tell you exactly how to rid yourself of it. A hypnotherapist works by making your subconscious mind more open and more receptive to positive suggestions. He tries to reduce the pain, dislike or fear factor that you associate with that particular task.

In ensuing sessions, he systematically works on the reaction till it altogether dissolves from your system. Very soon, you will find yourself shedding your anxiety and developing a relaxed attitude each time you think of the task. Why, you might even come to like it and do it quite readily in just a few more days’ time!

If you have been desperately trying to get a negative habit out and nothing seems to work in spite of your best efforts, do give hypnosis a try. It does truly work like magic!
